Angela Cusimano, PhD Licensed Psychologist
Hello and welcome! I am so glad that you are here. I have been working with children and families in educational, research, and clinical settings since 1996 and it is my passion to help kids, teens, and families achieve the future they want and deserve.
I completed my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at the University of North Texas (UNT) in 2013 and received specialty training in Marriage & Family Therapy. My doctoral dissertation studied the effects that parental conflict has on children’s well-being and how a strong bond between a parent and a child can protect kids from the negative effects of this conflict. Most families have conflict, but there are constructive ways to deal with conflict that we can discuss and practice.
“Creating Hope for a Better Tomorrow.”
Because I was raised by a single mother who encouraged me to follow my dreams no matter the cost, getting a doctorate was not the highest achievement I could pursue. In 2012, I swore allegiance to my country and became an active duty psychologist for the United States Air Force. I received top-notch clinical training from leaders in the field of psychotherapy. I separated from service in 2015 and continue to serve our Nations heroes at the Department of Veterans Affairs. It is truly a blessing and an honor to be a Veteran and help my brothers and sisters in arms.
My Approach to Counseling
I believe that therapy involves teamwork, meaning that we will discuss your goals and agree on a treatment that will help you meet those goals. In general, I see “talk therapy” or supportive therapy as helpful to an extent, but I tend to lean towards evidence-based treatments, or ones that we know to be the most effective for certain concerns or issues.
I strongly believe that a successful therapeutic relationship is one that involves mutual trust, respect, and genuine honesty. The individuals and families that I have worked with tend to share that they like how “real” and “easy to talk to” I am and how genuinely and deeply I seem to care about helping them to find the outcome that they are seeking. It is truly a gift to do this work.
I am a good fit for those who are seeking effective treatments that involve some time, work, and effort outside of session. There are skills, tools, and techniques that we will discuss in session that you will be expected to practice in your daily life to see if they will give you the results you are looking for. Research suggests that treatments which involve practice and “homework” outside of session tend to be the most effective in the long run; essentially I’m training you to be your own therapist so you can learn to manage problems on your own and have access to a variety of tools whenever you need them.
